Best Hikes Near Vagabond Lodge.

Staying at Vagabond Lodge puts you in the heart of some of the best hiking in the Canadian Rockies. From powerful waterfalls to turquoise alpine lakes, there are incredible trails within a short drive of the lodge.

Here are some of our favourite nearby hikes.

Wapta Falls (Yoho National Park)

One of the most impressive waterfalls in the region.

Wapta Falls is a wide, powerful cascade on the Kicking Horse River. The trail is an easy forest walk that gradually leads you to a dramatic viewpoint above the falls. In peak flow, the sheer force and volume of water is unforgettable.

A perfect half-day hike with a big reward for relatively little effort.

Cedar Lake

A quiet local favourite just outside Golden.

This short forest trail leads to a peaceful alpine lake surrounded by trees and mountain views. In summer, it’s a great place to stop for a swim after your hike — simple, refreshing, and never too busy.

Bring a towel and take your time enjoying a slower pace of the mountains.

Hamilton Falls (Yoho National Park)

A beautiful waterfall hike in a quieter corner of Yoho.

Hamilton Falls offers a forested trail experience with river sections and peaceful surroundings before reaching a scenic waterfall tucked into the landscape. It’s less crowded than many of the more famous stops in the national park, making it ideal if you want something more relaxed.

It’s well worth stopping at the Natural Bridge in Yoho National Park on the way home too, where the Kicking Horse River has carved a powerful stone arch through the rock over thousands of years.

Emerald Lake (Yoho National Park)

A true Canadian Rockies classic.

Emerald Lake is known for its vivid turquoise water and surrounding mountain peaks. A flat, well-maintained trail circles the lake, making it perfect for an easy walk, photography, or a relaxed afternoon outdoors.

It’s one of the most iconic and photogenic spots in the region, and well worth the short drive from the lodge.

A final note

Mountain conditions can change quickly, so always check local trail advice before heading out. If you’re staying with us, we’re happy to suggest hikes based on the weather, conditions, and how much adventure you’re looking for. Remember to pack bear spray, stay aware of wildlife, and follow Leave No Trace principles so these incredible places stay wild and beautiful for everyone who comes after you.
